Standing In His Presence

The Problem with Unity

ppeThis past month, when several prominent leaders from the Charismatic church met with Pope Francis on the topic of unity in the body of Christ, Mike Bickle (director of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City) took a moment in the discussion to pointedly ask the pontiff his views on the errors of universalism and the idea that ‘all paths lead to God’.  Mike’s report was that the Pontiff affirmed that Jesus was, indeed, the only way of salvation.

But, unfortunately, it leaves one to wonder what it all means.  The very fact that Mike Bickle even had to ask is grounds to know that something is wrong, regardless whatever direct answer he was given.

The truth is, over the three years of his pontificate Pope Francis’  has done little to reinforce doctrine, but rather has, in many ways, diminished it. Instead of defending the faith, he has choosen “dialogue”, and at times, even apologized for the tradition and church history. The object here is not to point fingers, or raise a “railing accusation”, but simply to ask questions–the same questions Mike Bickle asked, but deeper.  An accuser is often only the tool of evil (Proverbs 6:16-18), but we are called to test and prove all things, to use righteous judgment, and to guard the flock from wolves and false teaching.  We ask in order that we may hold fast to the good and reject what isn’t.

Where I Feel the Current Prayer Movement is Off Track

prayer1For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:  But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to naught things that are:  That no flesh should glory in his presence.

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:  That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Brothers and sisters, I write to you today concerning the modern prayer movement.  Many reading this may not understand, and many of those that do may not agree.  Nevertheless, I am moved to write what I have seen and felt.

The prayer movement as it is popularly expressed is sadly off track. I do not say this lightly, or flippantly, nor is my intention to condemn it.  But, it has, nevertheless, succumbed to many of the same errors it originated in, or, perhaps, never left.

These errors are not those indicated by popular ‘heresy-hunters’, ready to criticize anything other than their little circle.  These issues strike at the root of the philosophy, leadership, and ambition of these men.

These are not recent errors, nor am I rash in my disclosure of them.  I have been aware of the movement for some 15 years, lived nearby for a year, attended numerous functions over the years, and been in association with many who still love and follow it.  These are issues that I have worked through in this time, have come to an understanding and knowledge of, and have seen evidence of, either in realms of discernment, or even incidental admissions of their own mouth.

A Grace Whack Responds

door_ajar2It was only a matter of time…  You post articles, you write books, you spend hours some days conversing with them, driving to meet with them, researching their ‘doctrines’.  Eventually, they respond.  I don’t intend to make any sort of a habit of honoring these with responses.  I’ve tried, they’re just generally not interested.  But, for the interest of study, it is sometimes useful to have a field specimen, of sorts.  Occasionally, a piece is worth dissecting publicly, to see what is at work, for the interest of those observing.

As such, the following below is the latest response to my post on Biblically Confronting the False-Grace movement (here).  The comment was too long to publish on that post for one, and, additionally, the format of comment and response does not allow for adequate interaction with the arguments.

But, when you choose to engage, you have to make a decision from the out-set.  Even when studying and countering the religious spirit, you have to set some ground-rules, or boundaries.  It must be agreed upon that if a subject matter is thoroughly proved wrong through a study of Scripture by one party, the other must question their position.  Unfortunately, of every Grace-Whack we’ve ever come across, not one has cared that every point has been thoroughly contested and disproved.
